DIY 30" Pool Noodle Ornament Wreath

November 8, 2012

I've been in a holiday mood lately. I asked my Facebook friends when is too early to put up a Christmas tree. They all said go for it but Brian said not until Thanksgiving. So I'll wait. In the meantime, there's no reason why I can't put up a holiday wreath! In fact, my DIY Burlap Halloween wreath was still up after October 31st and that looked tacky so I had to put up something in the interim. This was perfect!
I thought about just going the easy route and buying a wreath but it is REALLY difficult to find a large wreath anywhere but online. I can't even find large wreath forms! Seriously, why is that? I know they'd be in demand. My friend Abi said when she lived in Oklahoma she saw large wreaths everywhere so maybe it's just a local thing? I went to Walmart and the only large wreaths they had were the traditional pine branches, poinsettia sort. Borrrring.

So I decided to make my own. To do this I used a pool noodle as my wreath form! I cut the ends into opposite slants so that they fit together nicely. To cut the ends I used a mini hacksaw. Then I simply bent the noodle into a circle and secured the ends with duct tape and a few pin needles.
I bought the shatterproof ornaments at Walmart. If you do this definitely get the shatterproof kind. I bought one 50 count red/green/gold assortment. One 26 count green, one 26 count brown, one 26 count gold, three 'tiny bulb' red/white/green assortments and one 'tiny bulb' gold assortment. In all, I think I paid close to $50 for the bulbs and I used them all.
Fifty dollars seems like a lot to pay for a DIY wreath but my wreath is 30" wide and compared to other 30" ornament wreaths you can buy online, it's still about half as much if not less when you include shipping costs.
To add the ornaments I used a pair of heavy duty scissors and punctured a hole in the place where I wanted to put a bulb in. Then I squeezed hot glue on the top of the ornament and put it in the opening I just made.
Looks much better than my old Halloween decorations;)

I will be trying this.

I have a leftover pool noodle from a summer project and I bought like 10 packs of plastic ornaments from the Target $1 section.

FYI hot glue does not stand up to temperature fluxuations. I learned the hard way as my wreath fell apart, even in Dallas.

Ah... C'mon!! There is a LOT more to this wreath than you're letting on. You didn't use hot glue, and how did you attach the smaller ornaments and the larger ornaments that didn't reach the wreath form? You're leaving out the important details. Why?
