Filing Cabinet is the PERFECT Place for your Fabric Stash!

August 20, 2013

Since I moved Henri out of the sunroom and into a proper bedroom I've been trying to figure out ways to make all my sewing paraphernalia and office furniture fit comfortably in the sunroom (approximately a 6' x 12' space).
For months now, I've kept my fabric stash in his closet (the only proper closet in the entire house BTW) since he doesn't have that many clothes he didn't need it. But in pre-war built home, closet space is a hot commodity, and his was being horribly misused by my fabric. So I decided to move all of it to the new sewing room....somehow? This is what I ended up using....a filing cabinet! It's so perfect.
All I did was buy an old used filing cabinet off Craigslist for $35. Then I spray painted it pink. I also bought filing folders off Craigslist (300 for $10 BARGAIN!!) and cut the folder part off so that only the two sticks remained. I used the two sticks to drape the folded fabric over and then placed it in the drawer just like a hanging file folder.

I should have taken a video so you can see how incredibly easy it is to open and sort through. I just pull open the drawer and all my fabric is splayed out for me to see. No more pushing through hangers or sorting through boxes. And it holds WAYYY more than you'd think. I stored my entire two tiered closet of fabric into this 3 drawer cabinet. It's tight but I kind of like it that way. As long as I can see it without having to physically work hard it's just fine!
I think I'm going to buy another one to put next to the one I just bought. That will be more than enough room for what I have and then some! And in case you're wondering I sprayed the cabinet with Krylon's Gloss Ballet Slipper. Enjoy!

Great idea! You might check with nearby school systems to see if they have surplus sales. I go to one in Duval County (Jacksonville), FL, frequently. There are always tons of file cabinets for no more than $15 each.

Last Spring my friend saw this on pintrest and so we started in on "her stash"... yikes; we filled a 5 drawer cabinet plus we also used at least 8 more of the plastic file hanger drawers she already had that were full of fabric. She is a quilter so we broke it down to smaller scraps in color groups. It worked great. Plus, if you want you can overlap your scraps to hang them. Pinning can help too. We got a file cabinet at the local D.I. (thrift store) for $50. Not bad when we saw new ones the same size for close to $100.
