Tutorials: One Dress. Five Variations.

August 17, 2011

My friend Beth from Stories to A to Z referred me to this incredible dress.
And the most amazing part? It's made with just ONE seam!

There are limitless variations! We made this dress with a longer skirt and all 6 of my bridesmaids wore it differently! Such a great dress, I made 3 of my own!

i think this was called the infinity dress, right and has been in vogue for years now, first saw a Tutorial on making one for self on Craftster say 3 years back!

Wow! What a cool idea. I don't think every example is too wearable but I love the concept behind it. It makes you think about fabric and construction a whole lot more and makes me wonder what I can do with existing styles I have or how I can tweak patterns to make them just a little more versatile.

Rowena has a bunch of great tutorials on her blog. I just made a darling peasant dress based on her nursing top pattern, and it turned out great. I just got back into sewing again, and if I can make something adorable and wearable, anyone can. :)

I made this dress about a year ago, it was a bit tricky to get my head around certain parts (I think the waist confused me!), but the end result was really good and everyone was shocked that I had made it.

The only downside was that my local store only had 1 single roll of jersey fabric and it was printed, so when I wrap the straps around it's pretty tricky to keep the pattern showing (it looks odd with plain bits next to patterned sections) so if you can get either plain material, or patterned on both side it will make life easier!

Just yesterday I ordered some lovely red fabric for my mum & I to make one of these for my sisiter's birthday present!

Just to add, that anyone who, like me, may not be perfectly slim & toned (!), you may want to buy a little more fabric than you need & make a little boob tube type top to go underneath.
If you are wearing the dress out and you fidget or move about a lot, the straps do have some movement and a bit of skin or bra sometimes shows through for certain styles (mainly at the back for me - my back fat isn't the most attractive thing to flaunt!!), a little boob tube prevents any exposure!
Although if you have a nice figure (as does the lady who made the tutorial) then you don't have to worry about it!

I made this dress about 4 years ago. I can wear the version with shoulder straps and the wide band OVER the bust. But anytime I try to do that big picture, or the first one of the little pictures, there's too much showing on the sides, and the straps lay in such a way that they fold exactly where darts should be at the bust, LOL. I might re-do it, using less overlap in the middle so the straps can go further out to the sides.
Also, be aware that a knot against your back can be uncomfortable if you're driving....or sitting on a plane for hours....

They are forever showing this dress as a great bridesmaid option for all body types on WE tv's My Fair Wedding with David Tutora (most likely killed that spelling.) Anyway great find on the pattern to make it:)

They are forever showing this dress pattern on My Fair Wedding and talking about what a great bridesmaid dress it can be. The option of making it yourself would save a lot of money:)

Fun that you can make different styles from one dress! t also made me smile because they used to sell a similar dress on tv-shop when I was a kid.
