Wedding 7: Kate's Dress Knockoff Revealed

May 3, 2011

Kate Middleton's wedding dress is now being frantically replicated by gown designers everywhere.
Brian jokingly said I should sew a wedding dress like hers to giveaway on the blog.
I was like, "That's a great idea....... it's too bad I'm not qualified for the challenge."
I think it is a very close replica. The roses in the lace are a bit larger than Kate's dress. The material also seems a bit more shiny. Here's a photo for reference. And I guess, Kate's looked more well fitted in the bodice (ie smoother). But again, overall very close.

ABC News shared designers Michelle and Henry Roth's replica this morning. Tthe Roths have been working on every detail of their "Kate Dress" that they plan to sell as part of their collection at Kleinfeld Bridal Salon (gosh I wish I could shop there for my gown). Via abcnews:

"Like detectives, the Roths examined every detail of Kate's dress -- from the neckline to the sleeves to the pleats in the skirt. Nothing was overlooked. With sketch in hand, they then rushed to Lace Star in New York's Garment District to find the perfect fabric.
Out in the store, women were already waiting breathlessly for a chance to try on "The Kate," while seamstresses worked around the clock, carefully hand-sewing and applying every piece of lace."

Kate's dress was awesome!
I'd love to have a dress like this on my wedding day (in the future!)

It is very close and also very pretty. It does seem that the bodice is a bit shorter too.

I saw another knock off on Access Hollywood Live. This one will be sold at Nordstrom (it's already on their site, too!) I'm sure they'll be popping up everywhere. I LOVED the whole look.

I don't know what it is but something feels very 'ick' to me about the knock-off. Perhaps it's just that the quality is so far off from the original.

@SewsCuteYou're right. By just an inch I think, but still subconsciously noticeable.

I think these seamstresses can be very proud of themselves. And you are qualified Kathleen. I've got the evidence that proves otherwise!

@EtcetorizeI think I might know what you mean. There is something a little ick about replicating someone else's wedding dress. Especially one so iconic now.

When you first see someone in a wedding dress the look is free of any pretenses. Making a dress that copies another is always bound to have small differences and therefore not as perfect.

i dont think i would want to copy someone's wedding dress, especially not one that was seen by millions!

I'd love Pippa's dress, and the one Kate changed into for her reception. There was so much win going on with all the dresses.

I think you should do it! Do the dress, do the dress!!!! :D

Seriously, did you post your engagement story on here somewhere or your announcement? I have combed through all of your weddng and engagement tagged posts as carefully as I can and I cannot find out when it happened. I can't believe I missed it and I still don't know what the story is! I totally though you were married and I still totally missed the boat as to the whole plan!!!

PS... that dress is a decent copy but it's not anywhere as pretty as Kate's. As you said, too shiny, the lace is too large... PSSST (whispers) it looks a little cheap

There's no way a copy can come too close to the original, a designer in NZ did the same thing in 17 hours and did a good job, but still not as good as the original. This one has too much shine (which looks cheap) and the corsetry under the dress doesn't look right.
The Jane Yeh version (http://www.3news.co.nz/Jane-Yehs-copycat-Royal-Wedding-dress/tabid/817/articleID/209424/Default.aspx) still has the lace too big, but from memory the fabric was a bit better. Tiara was completely wrong though!

I guess if you used the same materials as the original you could copy it...but at what cost?
What's more the original dress was specific for such an important event... on a "regular" wedding I feel the train and mere length would look out of place. I would adapt the concept.

@Kathleen Francesyes, you've said it much better than I did. I didn't mean to come across as nasty. But really, how can anyone possibly make a gown in a few hours that took a massive team of artisan couturiers months to create?

@Emily in Wonderland
Emily, I very briefly mentioned it in the Engagement Frock post at the bottom.
