Bedroom Makeover Week!

March 14, 2011

Recently Brian and I bought a new king sized bed. We were having a lot of problems with the full sized one we had slept on for umpteen years. In the final week I was pregnant with Eloise Brian slept on the sofa because I couldn't stand to sleep on my right side any longer and the old mattress had a slight dip in the middle which caused you to roll to the center when you slept on your left.

It was torture. Now, we really couldn't afford one of those $1,000 mattress and boxsprings that I longed for. After we left Longwood Gardens we stayed at The Lancaster Arts Hotel and they had an AMAZING king sized bed with pillowtop and high loft mattress. I just dreaded returning to our old full bed.

So we looked for alternative options. I eventually found mattresses sold on overstock for around $300. And we bought used boxsprings (chemically cleaned) for $50. My father gave us an old metal frame and I bought a memory foam topper from overstock for $50. All together we only paid $400 for a REALLY comfortable new king sized bed. And I can't tell you the amazingness of it all.

One problem. It didn't quite fit our bedroom. So we decided to totally rearrange the setup which wasn't a simple task. It required removing the old mattresses, a futon, a tv stand. And moving everything else to across the room. Including installing a new cable line for the tv which I did on my own. Not an easy task.

And it feels better but not quite....great. We were missing a headboard since our old one was full sized and the room lacked a color scheme/crispness. So I decided to make it my new project.

Therefore.....long story longer this week I will be posting all the great sewing projects/embellishments I'm doing to the room. Each day (fingers crossed) I'll be posting a new video. My first featured project will be my new shades. My old ones were shabby/sloppy (see top photo). So I made new ones with very little money and they look AH-mazing, if I do say.

Other projects to come will be:

Headboard Tutorial
Ruffled Duvet (Urban Outfitters copy)
Hanging Curtains
Embellishing a Bedskirt
Pillows
Fur Rugs

I don't have a 'before' photo which is for the best. We moved the toy box (formerly in the living room)to the bedroom because frankly we had no where to put it. Unfortunately it has caused a lot of mess. Think 'Hoarders'. Got it? There you go....'before'.

I'm still editing the video I made of the blinds which I'm going to try and post today but if I can't get it up by 1pm it will be up tomorrow morning. Trying this new video editing  software which is giving heaps of trouble.

Oh I'm so excited for you! We recently made over our Master Bedroom it was so worth it. I can't believe I waited so long to do it.
I have attached a link to my blog with a great tutorial on making king size pillow shams. I can't wait to see how your room turns out!

we have been putting off getting a mattress for some time now..but we have the same "dip" issue. I will definitely have to check out overstock, that's quite reasonable. Looking forward to seeing completed your projects!

Just wanted to throw this out for what it's worth: we bought a mattress (memory foam type) from Overstock several years ago, and although it was great at first, it's really gone downhill in the past year (despite buying foam and down toppers to make it more comfortable). We're hoping this year to be able to afford a newer (better, but unfortunately more expensive) mattress, because the one we have is hard as a rock at this point (the cheap foam does that).

So just thought I'd throw my $0.02 in... I'm really hoping that your mattress is a lot better than the one we got!!! :)

Exciting!! I love redecorating.

Our bedroom is also a scene from Hoarders. It's actually embarrassing, even to me Queen of Messes, but everything that doesn't have a place always ends up in our room so the rest of the house isn't cluttered. Blech.

Our mattress does the SAME thing. I didn't know you could get mattresses on Overstock. That's a pretty reasonable price, too, for a king sized bed. Way to go! I'll have to check that out. :) Can't wait to see all the changes this week! :)

Casey,
The mattress we bought is an innerspring mattress rather than a memory foam. I bought the 4" memory foam topper separate. I think Brian actually likes the bed without the memory foam but I like the softness. Honestly, right now, it might be a little too soft for me too. So if it does get a little harder that might be okay with me. LOL.

I was going to go with a memory foam mattress too but I laid on the ones at an expensive furniture store and too me they seemed much harder than the innerspring mattresses in comparison.

That all being said, we were expecting it not to last as long as a more expensive one. If we get a couple years out of it I'll feel fine with eventually getting a new one. Hopefully down the road we'll be in a better position to buy one of the more priceier brands.

I hope you find a better one! I've laid on the Sealy's and they seem pretty good for the price. I found a queen sized one at Big Lots (don't know if you have those in FL) for only $600. And Macy's had a GREAT sale on President's day for around $300 (but I don't know if it came with a boxspring). If you're going with a queen or less you can find some good deals.

Good luck too:)

Hooray! I'm excited to see your newly decorated room. We just upgraded to a king mattress from a queen with horrible body impressions. There's no going back. :)
