Thrift Store Thursday: Cupid's Neophyte Pencil Skirt

October 7, 2010

The 'neat little bow' has been all over fashion. See here, here, here, here, and oh yeah here.

Say Yes to Hoboken recently did a 'neat little tutorial' on how to make the bow and made a sweet pencil skirt to go with it. So I found an oversized pencil skirt at the Thrift Store yesterday for $1.50.

I took it home, took it in on the sides and took the leftovers and made a matching 'neat little bow' to take center stage on my new sweet pencil skirt in lipstick red.

This skirt was originally more of a tulip shape. You can't tell from the photos but I kept it below my knees and had it taper at the bottom for a more sophisticated look.

If you're looking for a similar find, the perfect thrift store candidate would be long, wool, pencil skirts, any size, actually, the bigger the better since you want some leftover material to make the bow.

It's just lovely. The colour is great! I have one question. I bought a pencil script from the thrift store and it's 2 sizes too big. It just about fits at the waist. When I take in the sides, do I need to take the waistband off too?

Thanks for your help.

Grosgrain said... Best Blogger Tips

Anonymous. No. I would just start my sewing at the seam below the waistline. Turn it inside out. Pin it to your form. Take it off and sew down the pin line.

I love going to thrift stores and finding cheap treasures! But usually I can't find things that fit the way I would like. Thanks to your blog, I have been inspired to teach myself to sew. I LOVE IT!!! i started by buying this at the thrift store that were way too big and then altering them to my size. I'm still a beginner, of course, but I'm getting better (and more creative!) with each alteration. Maybe someday I'll be able to make something from scratch :)
Love your blog!!!
