Thrift Store Thursday: The Goldilock Jupe

August 5, 2010

I found this cute Forever 21 skirt for $2 at the Salvation Army. It had a really charming white bias detail around the waist and pockets. I loved the mustard yellow color and the material which is linen. But what I didn't like was the length. It's short. Like really short. See bottom pic for before.
What I did first was take out the hem. If you ever find a skirt that you think is too short, look at the hem. Lots of skirts have a generous hem (see bottom pic). All I did was rip out them hem with a seam ripper. That helped a little bit but it was still too short.
So what I did next was add a white trim to the bottom. Now I did this differently than the Modern Luau Frock. Instead of sewing it right sides together, I sewed it into the the hem so that a little piece of yellow came apart from the white trim. I really like the way this looks. Sort of like a faux white slip. (See above pic). The higher you sew in the white fabric on the skirt, the more slip-like it looks.
As you can see the before was WAYY to high up my bum. And the skirt had a hem over an inch wide. I just ripped it out, used a lot of spray starch and ironed. If you find a cute thrift store skirt like me, don't give up on it, it might be a diamond in the rough. PS: Jupe means skirt in french. It just sounds cuter. PPS: The ballet flats were also a thrift store find. Brand new, just my size.

Kristin,
I usually go to the Salvation Army. And I am really impressed by some of their inventory. Not all thrift stores are equal. I also go to a Community Aide store and don't find as many name brand items. I think it's just the people that donate. They must have good taste:)

Great find! Thanks for sharing how you made it work for you. Being tall, I am always looking for more length in my skirts. Rebecca

What are these amazing thrift shops? Mine never have anything that cool or inexpensive. Also, when I do buy a skirt I'm too scared to try cutting it up and altering it! I just need to go for it! Keep the tutorials coming, I need inspiration!
