DIY Hipster Sippy Cup (Mason Jar)

August 3, 2013

So you think your sip is hip? Wait until you check out the MASON JAR sippy cup. You can buy this at RedRobinRoad for $8. BUT I do think you could DIY this yourself. You can buy the spouts themselves on Amazon. A two pack is only for $8.44! I'm not sure if they'll fit but they look very similar to the one in the photo. They are both from Nuby. Take out the flat circle and replace it with the sippy spout! Voila! Instant hipster sippy cup;-) If you are worried about your kids using a glass cup they do make plastic mason jars. But you might have to cut a hole in the lid yourself for the sippy spout.

Cute idea, but, well, it's the glass that worries me. Call me overprotective, but I refuse to give my toddler a cup made out of anything breakable. They drop cups all the time, and it only takes once to get a serious cut and a trip to the hospital for stitches!

They stopped making juice bottles out of glass for toddlers for a reason. Don't think this is a good idea.

Hmmm, well, they do make plastic mason jars. Even BPA free. However you might have to make your own hole for the spout.

My kids have been drinking out of glass mason jars for a while now with the cuppow lids. Unless thrown on a hard tile floor, they are quite resilient! My daughter dropped hers on the concrete driveway and it only cracked, they are very thick walled (especially the 8oz jam jars). Obviously I wouldn't give one to an infant who was in the throwing stage, but that's just common sense and user discretion. ;) There are also many different kinds of mason jar sleeves which add quite a bit more protection that you'd think.

@LeAnnaMy kids have been drinking out of mason jars as well. We have the little 4oz ones that I use as juice glasses (which is the ones that I think are in the photo above). They ARE very resilient. I think the smaller ones are more resilient than the larger ones because the glass is the same thickness as the larger ones but they are so small.

I guess I never thought of giving this to a baby because I let my children drink out of a bottle for so long. We also have carpet in our home so I STILL have the older kids drink out of a sippy cup if it's an especially staining liquid.

But like I mentioned in the comments and added to the post, they do make plastic ones but you probably don't just have them lying around like the glass ones. And part of the allure for me was not having to buy anything but the sippies.

I haven't used these, but I did glass bottles with my last baby and liked them a lot. These are cute!

I exclusively breastfeed, but plan to use glass baby bottles if I ever have the need. I love this idea. Glass IMHO is a much healthier way to drink liquids. I think there is a study that shows that pets that eat out of glass instead of plastic live longer.

They stopped making juice bottles out of glass because plastic is cheaper. ;)

I firmly believe kids will do exactly what they're expected to. I expect my kids to be careful with glass items they are given. We start our kids on glass cups as soon as they can hold them! They also use glass dishes, glass straws, etc. My hubby and I break things more often than they do.

Anyway, I think this is really cute!

Just FYI, the link you provided to Amazon goes to a replacement spout that doesn't work with mason jar bands. I bought them, but they are way too small to work with a standard mouth mason jar. I know that you said it MAY work, but it would have been nice to have something linked that was the right size. :-)

Kathleen, thank you for your response. The picture on the Amazon site and what I was sent are identical. It came directly from Amazon, not a marketplace seller. I haven't taken them out of the package, because it's obvious that they would go right through the canning jar lid. I think there must be a larger size NUBY spout which is being used by the Red Robin company. There are a variety of different NUBY sippy cups, graduated in size by age of child. I'll just have to look and see what size replacement spout will actually work, and then get them. I was working on doing this for my granddaughter when she's at our house, so I'll just plod along until I find the solution. Thanks for the great idea!

@DebbieDebbie, I found these:

http://www.amazon.com/Nuby-Silicone-Replacement-Spouts-Handled/dp/B007HLQT46/ref=sr_1_10?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1376600398&sr=1-10&keywords=nuby+wide+replacement+spout

They are bigger. It says they are 7cm or 2 3/4" inches. But that seems like it might be too big? At least you can measure your glass's mouth. Remember since there's an indentation it should fit tightly.

If you do buy them please let me know if they work. I changed the above link to reflect the new sipper.

Sounds good, Kathleen. Thanks.

@DebbieSoo, I searched my pantry and found a larger Nuby sippy lid with the same measurements as the one listed. I also have mason jars and it looks like it fits. I don't have any lids for my mason jars so I can't say 100% yet until I go out and buy another mason jar with a lid but it looks like it would fit.

How are you getting the mason jar lid to stay on? I have the correct spout, but the mason jar lid keeps popping off!!

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

So I bought the wide mouth nuby lids and they fit but as soon as she sucks on it the lids leaks everywhere. I'm not sure how to fix this.

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

I am also having a problem with the mason jar lid n or staying on... I tried cutting it a. it but I over did it...

what do you recommend?

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

for jars that are leaking and the spouts that are not fitting I would suggest the "Take and Toss" FIRST YEAR sippies take the lids out of these and use the mason jar lid Cap (circular piece inside lid) to trace around the take and toss sippy spouts cut and use there does not seem to be a problem then

hope it helps
