DIY Touch Screen Gloves for Kids (.....or adults;-)

December 31, 2012

The girls' Aunt Caren made these really nifty DIY touch screen gloves for Christmas. You can make them too! Just use any sort of metallic thread and sew into the tips of your index and thumb fingers. And it TOTALLY WORKS! You can get metallic thread at JoAnn's but it's probably sold at most fabric stores as well. It's a really great idea for those little kiddos who like to smart phone it up in the cold. Also, great for friends or YOURSELF! Embroider thread into a heart, their initials or any kind of fun shape!

Pressure Cooker Ribs

December 29, 2012

Just used my new PRESSURE COOKER last night. I was a bit skeptical but in 30 minutes my pork ribs literally fell off the bone! Not 8 hours! 30 minutes! Anyone else have a pressure cooker and would like to share some good recipe suggestions? I want to try everything!

Squared "Cheater" Down Quickie Quilt

December 28, 2012

This is actually pretty clever. It's a 'cheater' quilt made by simply sewing squares onto a down comforter. And I think it would work on any comforter, not just a down one. Via A Little Bit Funky. Get the full how-to in her post!

Automatic Pin Dispenser: Brilliant!

I bought myself a little pre-Christmas gift on Christmas eve. I saw this in the discount bin at JoAnn Fabric and figured no one would even know to get it for me so decided on treating myself. It's an automatic pin dispenser and the verdict is FABULOUS.
It's a little large for a pin container but it's totally worth the sacrifice in space. I was always knocking my little open container of pins over while I worked and they were awful to pick up. Not to mention how I'd always leave one behind for Henri to find later. The Pintastic keeps all my pins safe in the machine and dispenses them one by one when I need them. Just takes a couple AA batteries.
It's a discontinued item so it won't be available forever. But it's still on sale at Hancock Fabric for only $14.99! I paid $24.99 for mine at JoAnn's. I tried to get them to do a price match but it was a NO GO since clearance items don't apply along with a laundry list of other things which is a bit irritating. But I bought it anyway because I had a lot of sewing to do and I didn't want to wait for the Hancock one to ship out.

If you also have a problem with stray pins I highly recommend it.

DIY Fabric Rotary Strip Cutter

December 27, 2012

Check out this DIY rotary cutter via Key Art Studio Cakes used to cut fondant. She uses pizza cutting blades but I wonder if you used Fiskar rotary cutting blades instead whether or not you could cut fabric the same way? Would be a lot cheaper than those expensive electric rotary cutting machines.

DIY Cut Out Tee Angel Wings Pattern

December 24, 2012

I actually feel pretty blah about most cut out tees but I like this one. Would also look nice with a layered tee underneath, especially a gold one. OR you could add sequin fabric to the inside of the shirt. That would look pretty neat too. Fun for a kid or teen. Get the wing pattern and tutorial at Cut Out and Keep.

Kate Spade Simple Bow Cuff DIY Sleeve

I super dooper love this and I bet it only takes 10 minutes. Via Make It and Fake It. Get the pictorial tutorial on her site! Just use a little twill tape (she said she uses grosgrain ribbon but it looks like it *might* be twill tape which I think actually looks better than grosgrain ribbon for this kind of project) Of course remember that twill tape is not stretchable so don't make it too small or you won't be able to fit your arm through;)

Last Minute Homemade Gift Ideas: Sweater Slippers

I just bought these amazing Dearform sweater slippers from Kohls yesterday. But seeing this picture on left (credit unknown) inspired me.

If you wanted to try and DIY this, just cut off the sleeves off a large sweater (mens work best). Use the original cuff as the top. Turn wrong side out and sew raw edge closed. Turn right side out. Instant sweater slippers!

If your sleeves were big enough you could add fur to the inside like my Dearforms. You could also add vinyl to the bottom. Cut in the shape of your foot fold edges toward wrong side. Iron. Sew to bottom of slipper.

Last Minute Homemade Gift Ideas: Fabrics Wall Decals

Did you know you can use fabric Heat'n'Bond available at Walmart and JoAnns to make your own wall decals? Would make fun homemade gifts for the grandkids. Get the full tutorial at Made by Marzipan.

Card Table Makeover

These tables are kinda ugly. Ugly, but cheap. And they work in a pinch when you have parties or guests. But you don't have to be resigned to tablecloths. Use this how-to by The Bearded Family to revamp your ugly old card table. I would also recommend spray painting the metal with a fun color to match the fabric. Like aqua or hot pink, or if you can find it, mustard.

$1 Tinsel Purse

Love this $1 tinsel purse! I don't have that many holiday themed purses. Just get the cheapest clutch at your local thrift store and a $1s worth of tinsel and beaded garland=awesomeness.

Tacky Holiday Sweater. Are You Game?

Guys! I bought Brian this ugly holiday sweater to wear on Christmas day. (I bought it on eBay and paid a little more than I would have liked.) But it's really perfect, right? Not just tacky but kinda silly yet still authentic. I just hope it fits. When you buy online it's such a crap shoot.

I searched for days at thrift stores all around my house and found ZIP. I'm actually surprised that places like Kohls and Sears DON'T sell tacky holiday sweaters for men. Seriously, they are missing out on a untapped market!

Are any of you planning on wearing a tacky holiday sweater in a ironic way this year for Christmas day with the family?

DIY Ornament Garland

Yeah, we all know about ornament wreaths but check out how to easily make an ornament garland! I saw something like this at the Christmas Tree Shop last weekend but this looks so simple and you can make it all long or short as you like. Via Upside Down Grace.

Holidays, Stressful for the Kiddos AND the Kittes;-)

December 18, 2012

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Comfort Zone® products for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Does your pet get stressed in certain situations? Holidays can be particularly stressful for some animals: small children, long car rides, being left at home. Unfortunately a lot of pets tend to misbehave during these times. Comfort Zone® with Feliway® Products help to reduce that stress by mimicking their natural pheromones helping them to feel calm in their environment.

The product says it is 95% effective at reducing scratching and urine marking. So we put it to the test and tried it on my friend Abi's cats, Christopher (left) and Basil (right). Granted, both cats are generally pretty tame, but throughout the stress of a big move to a new house they seemed to handle things quite well.

The Comfort Zone® with Feliway® products help to control urine marking and scratching by releasing a completely odorless vapor that mimicks feline facial pheromones. Plug it in where your cat spends most of its time. It also helps multiple cats households for them to be relaxed around each other. Also, doesn't have to be changed frequently.

The spray is easy and convienient. Spray where a cat has marked or scratched or in a crate during travel. Learn more by visiting Comfort Zone® with Feliway® or their Facebook page. Liking their Facebook page is a great way to keep up with Comfort Zone.

You can buy Comfort Zone® with Feliway® products at pet specialty store including PetSmart and Petco, independant pet stores and online.

Awesome Personalized Christmas Stocking Pattern (free download)

Every year I make a new set of stockings for the family because every year I'm disappointed with the previous year's handiwork.
Plus, I can never seem to make them big enough no matter how hard I plan. We like to fill the stockings with good things, not just candy. So at times, items tend to be a little larger than 3" in width.
So this year I decided to really invest some time into making our stockings so that I wouldn't feel the need to revisit them again next year. This is what I came up with and I'm so pleased with the result.
PLUS, I made a printable pattern for you too! Here's a pic of the pattern below.

Instructions:

I recommend following these steps to the letter. It's actually pretty tricky for a stocking. If you mix up steps or leave out steps you'll run into trouble down the road.

Print pattern and tape together. Use the 4"x4" test square to make sure the pattern is the right size. Although, it's not that necessary for this pattern to be exactly correct since you're not wearing it. In fact you could enlarge or shrink the pattern if you wanted a smaller  or larger stocking.

The pattern is numbered so you can tell where each paper belongs. When you are taping the papers together overlap the squares at the top and bottom of each page.

10 Minute Scarves for Quick and Easy Gifts

December 14, 2012

So, my super hip friend Cheila came over to make some quickie scarves with me on Monday. I recommend these highly! If you gotta make a bunch of homemade gifts in an hour this is the way to go!
Here are some etsy sellers that make them. Check 'em out for inspiration. Red, Blue and White. Stripes and solids. Pumpkin and Brown.

First find a couple old tee shirts. Thrift stores are best for finding cheap tees. Also, and this is important, you want a knit that will curl well on the sides when cut. I've found that knits made mostly of rayon or lycra work best. The thick 100% cotton kind doesn't curl and just look like strips of fabric when you're done.  I recommend tee shirts instead of loose fabric because it comes pre sewn on the sides. But if you must use loose knit just remember to sew it into a loop.

Although I think these look cool. I have to say, they aren't that warm. Unless you wrap them tight around your neck but I think most people wear them loosely. They might keep the back of your neck warm but for me, it's the front that needs the protection. If that's a problem for you too, I recommend making a little one that ties in the back, like this one below from etsy seller elenorashop! It might take a few more steps but it's still quite easy.
 So here we go....
1. Cut top of tee off just under the armpits. If you're making several of these, to make things go faster you can layer each tee on top of one another.

2. Fold fabric so that the two seams almost meet. Leave an inch of space between the seams.

3. Cut from the bottom up into strips. Leave the top seam uncut.

4. Lift up fabric by the middle (where the uncut seam is).

5. Hold by the middle and start gathering the strips.

6. Like so.

7. Stretch out your fabric.

8. Cut one of the connected seams lengthwise along each strip.

9. Cut off one strip from the scarf. Using that strip make a knot around the remaining seam.

10. Wrap the strip around the seam to cover it completely.

11. Knot it at the end around a strip.

12. Done!
