Since the crib was wide there was little danger of him falling off, and also it was pretty close to the floor, so if he did he wouldn't get hurt. A twin futon on the floor seemed better than dealing with a head injury in the middle of the night. If I were you, I wouldn't buy a new crib but would do coordinating fabrics for a twin size bed and the crib.
