Pretty Fencing for Renters

May 29, 2012

For years I've wanted a fence for our side yard. The only thing between it and a medium traffic road is a thin little sidewalk and ever since Molly was starting to walk I've feared one of the kids would run into oncoming traffic.
So this year I said, security deposit be damned, I was going to put in a fence, concrete, digging and all. Nothing would be worth having one of them be hurt....or worse. But as I was online shopping at Lowes I found these things called "foam fencing" which actually isn't "foam" I don't know why they call it that. It's more of a heavy plastic. It just stakes into the ground. Now, I've seen similar items before used around flower beds but these were taller and longer and more....'fency' looking. Some were even 46" high. Mine were 32.5" tall. So I went to Lowes and bought some. The price point wasn't bad either, only $22 a panel. We would have probably gone with white but the white version was more than twice as much and only available online. Weird, huh. For the entire width of our side yard we only spent $180 plus tax. All the hardware was included.
What's even better is that it only took me a couple hours to install and it would have taken less time but there was a concrete brick embedded in the ground blocking one of the fence stakes so Brian had to go out and buy a shovel and dig it out. Plus, I had to trim a few bushes in the way.

I immediately received compliments on the fence from my neighbor sitting on her porch and my mom who came the next day. I wonder what our landlords thinks.
Now, one caveat, this fence is super flimsy. So, if you're looking for a heavy duty fence, this isn't for you. If you had a big dog I could see it breaking through. But for our needs and maybe yours it was just right.

Even better, when we move I can probably sell them on Craigslist.
Plus, I'll be putting up this in the furthest point of our backyard today. I wish the fence was a bit higher to hide this pool. It's not the prettiest but it will keep the kids entertained and I'm willing to forgo the appearance for the fun.

That looks amazing! I'm not renting but I'm selling and not about to sink anymore money into this place if I can help it but that really fills the bill for you and many others I'm sure and it looks SO nice and is functional to a point but doesn't cost an arm and a leg! Thanks for sharing this!

Looks good! If you really want the fence white, you could probably sand and paint it. Then again, the last thing you want to do after installing a fence is go back and paint it!

Just found this from Pinterest. Love the idea, but I have a 90 lb. dog so I will keep looking. Thanks for the hint!

Thank you for this!! I have been searching for a cost effective solution for when we rent. (That way we don't have to narrow our choices with two dogs and a toddler!) Thank you for sharing your idea. All the best!

Sorry you got complaints. I think it looks nice! I have been looking for something similar to this! Specifically to keep my son in our yard :) if you do want it white, a good option is the rustoleum spray paint for plastics that you can use on lawn furniture, etc. I have been using it on some old furniture that has a few different materials and its awesome! You can get it pretty much anywhere

Hmm...I just tried to comment but I don't see it. I think it looks great! I have been looking for something to keep my toddler in the yard! If you would like it white, a good option is the rustoleum spray paint for plastics. You can use it on patio furniture, etc. I have been using it on some furniture I'm fixing up, that is made or several different materials and the paint is a lifesaver for me right now! You can get it at any hardware type store, and even Kmart :)
