Thrift Store Thursday: The Romantiks Frock

August 12, 2010

Isn't romantiks with a 'k' is more romantic?

I could easily see this frock in a modcloth lineup. It would be called something like Coffee and Dreams Dress (actually that's one on their site now). Wouldn't you like to wear a new Modcloth dress everyday? I wish I owned a dress shop so I could do just that. The storefront would be all white with wide planked white bead board on the walls on the inside, glossy black hardwood floors and black lamp lights on the walls. Very New Englandesque.

Anyway enough daydreaming, I saw this blouse at the Sal Val for $2 and I loved the sheerness of it. All the fabrics used were delicate and gossamer and nude toned. But it was only a blouse:( NO PROBLEMO!

I showed you before how I attached a long piece of fabric to the bottom of a blouse to turn it into a dress but with this blouse I added a little more. Instead of being attached to the bottom, it's attached from underneath at the slip. I also added a little lace to match the lace on top to make the addition more uniform with the blouse.
The piece of fabric I used to add to the bottom is gathered, with that new shirring technique, to make the bottom of the blouse open out like an A-line.

The colors were easy to match and were my favorite part of the dress because they blend in so well with the original blouse. I think a great idea would be to add something like this underneath a blouse. I just don't have the time.

I also took it in on the sides and added a little zipper in the back so that it could be more fitted around my bodice.

It's so flirty, maybe a little short but if you're on a date or....young....it's super cute I think. I wish they had dresses like this when I was in my early 20s. That was the Abercrombie & Fitch era. All polos, tees and shorts. I worked there for a short time while going to college and spent all the money I made back into the store....and then some. I was such a clothes addict.

.....was?

looks great so fun and sassy. I love how the original looks like it would be something that was cuter on the hanger than on a real body but you made it into something fabulous

Super cute! I LOVE the color of it and the colors you added. My friend and I are gonna have a sewing date soon...one that involves a thrift store and "fixer upper" clothing finds. I'm pretty thrilled!

Love the colors and the look. I was wondering...could you do a post sometime about how to add sleeves (even short sleeves) to a sleeveless shirt or dress? I would love some ideas.
