Rainbow Streaked Mermaid Hair

May 22, 2013

The girls and I had some hair fun on Monday. Molly decided she wanted to have a rainbow and Lily a red streak. Since it's going to be summer soon I gave in. We used Manic Panic which should wash out in 5-6 weeks. Everything turned out good except the aqua blue. That disappeared immediately after we rinsed it out. But I think the rainbow look is still evident.
To do this I just sectioned off her hair with foil and clamped the foil with two clips at the top corners while I brushed on the colors in 4" chunks. Then I folded the foil on both sides wrapping the hair. I also used a hairdryer to heat up the foil while waiting for the dye to set. I read that this helps intensify the color.
Manic Panic is about $10 for each jar of color. If you don't want to spend $60 on the six colors of the rainbow, just get the primary colors and mix to make the secondary ones. Also, I bought mine at Sally's and they had a two for one sale, which always helps;-) To get the mermaid waves in Molly's hair I used the Hot Shot Tools ceramic deep waver also bought at Sallys.

the thing with colors is that how well they stay depends a lot on what colors are naturally in your hair. mine is the same way - blues are out right away and purples turn pink when the blue is gone, but pinks and reds generally never come out... just a warning, you might have to dye over it to get rid of it.

@ninjadesignsYeah, the reds went on like gangbusters. We'll see how the rest goes. Since it's only one streak in their hair (and I didn't apply to scalp) I don't have a problem dying it back if I have to. I was surprised how well the purple went on though. I'm glad at least that didn't wash out.

What color of red did you buy? There are several shades on the site and your daughters looks great!

I dyed my daughter's hair purple last September. To get blue or purple to stay at all (according to my brother, whose hair has been blue on several occasions) you pretty much have to bleach your hair as light as it will go (yes, heat helps), then make sure the bleach is all rinsed out. He recommended that I do the bleach 1 day, then color a day later, after she washed her hair and it was thoroughly dry. Then you have to leave the color on as long as possible. We left the purple on for several hours, covering it with a plastic shower cap. Then we rinsed it, using water as cool as she could tolerate and as little water as possible. All told it lasted for quite a while.
Here's how it looked on day 2: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=437846412924398&set=a.125245230851186.8937.100000971305792&type=3&theater

Did you prelighten the girls' hair? They have such beautiful dark hair and the colors came out so well, i dont like the idea of bleaching my hair but am doing the mermaid color to the underneath and ends.
