Wedding: Paper Flowers vs. Real Flowers

December 12, 2011

Ever wonder if making paper flowers for your wedding was doable? Well....I guess there is the small factor of your artistic ability but looking through this woman's site makes me think it might be possible. The flowers look surprisingly realistic. It looks like she uses crepe paper for many of them. The process would probably take weeks but if you had months to plan perhaps it could be done?

The key is using paper of just the right color (in other words, nothing store bought). This site has a great selection of paper crepe folds. But to achieve that natural color fade in the petals you might have to learn to dye. Here's a tutorial for that too!
And using bleach.

I did paper flowers and pompoms for my wedding and it took forever but was totally worth it! Guests loved taking home the decorations and centerpieces, and still display them in their homes. I had a job at a call center at the time, so I made flowers all day while I took calls. If not for that, I don't know how I would have done it because none of my friends are crafty. Definitely start early!

I toyed with the idea of paper flowers, but knew I wouldn't be able to pull it off -- we were getting married out of town, and I didn't have any helpers locally =)

I had a friend who made all of her wedding flowers those origami kusadama flowers out of post it notes. Pretty creative I think! :) I live in Hawaii so we just picked flowers off our trees and still saved money :)

I did paper flowers for my wedding. I kept it simple, and was only doing flowers for the bouquets, the tables had other decorations on them. It was a time consuming process, but totally worth it! I would do a few each night while watching some tv, and was able to get them done in a few weeks.
