Embellish Knit Month: Day 30

December 22, 2010

The End. Oh it's been a wild ride. I'll have a recap post tomorrow of all my favorites but here we are, Day 30.

For this last (tear) knit I took a very light ballet looking top I bought at Community Aid for $1 and added nylon chiffon embellished flowers. Since the knit was so gauzy and light I knew that felt was NOT the way to go. And I think the chiffon looks just right for the weight of the fabric. See the before.
The flowers were made by taking layers of chiffon and melting the edges with a candle. I thought it might be tedious at first but the process actually went along quite quickly and it only took me about 30 minutes to make 16 flowers with 6 layers of chiffon each. Not too bad.

I only added them to one side for an asymmetrical look but I also thought they would look fantastic on both sides for a full but light feel.
Now for my small announcement, and I do mean small. I'm sorry if I might have led some of you on, it's nothing big. I just wanted to announce that I have loved this series so much and it's gotten such a fantastic response from you that I plan on continuing and doing it on a weekly basis along with my other weekly posts-Thrift Store Thursday, Technique Tuesday (which will be coming back now that EKM is over). I tried to do both in the beginning and yes, it was just lofty thinking.
I like the alliteration, but there's no weekday that begins with an 'E' or 'K'. If any of you out there can think of a cute title I'd love to hear it!
1. First things first, please ignore my embarrassing excuse for a dining table. The girls have colored on it with marker and crayons....and paint and God knows what else. And I have always intended to someday sand it all off but as you can see, that's never quite happened. So please forgive me:) Now, on with the show....cut 3 sized chiffon circles. You don't have to use nylon chiffon since you will be melting the edges. Make 32 of each size. What I did was accordion fold the fabric and cut 16 at once. The biggest is 4", medium 3" and smallest 2".
2. Taking two layers at once hold it AN INCH AND A HALF over a candle. Do not let the flame catch the fabric. YIKES! That would be bad. In fact maybe you should keep a glass of water nearby in case that might happen. The heat from the candle a couple inches above the flame should be enough to melt the edges just enough to look pretty. You will be able to instantly see the edges melt. Only melt them as much as I did in the picture to the left.
3. Use two layers of each circle and layer them so that you have the largest on the bottom and smallest in the center. There should be six layers of chiffon. Use a pin to hold the layers together until you are ready for the next step.
4. Pin flowers to sweater in the places you would like them to be and sew to sweater in centers.

DONE!

I'm so glad you are continuing these, they are so inspiring. How about Makeover Mondays? or does that sounds too much like a talk show?

You saved a beauty for the last. I love this one. And I still think you deserve a book deal!

Clara said... Best Blogger Tips

I LOVE this one!!! Definitely my favorite. Can't wait to see more!!

I think I like the flowers only to one side. If it were on both sides it seems like it would be way too much.

Thank you for being a trooper and showing us a EM every day for a month! I really enjoyed it and has inspired me. :)

In fact, I picked up a 3/4 sleeved red sweater this past weekend and am making plans for it. :)

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

That was supposed to say "EK" as in Embellished Knit, not "EM." Oops!

E = Embellishment Everyday. Because that way you can post it whenever works.

Beth W said... Best Blogger Tips

So you'll be doing it Mondays or Wednesdays? Why not just "Embellishment Monday" or some such? Glad you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed reading it! :D

I think this one is my favourite of the whole month! I look forward to seeing more embellishments. :)

You've done such an extraordinary job, Kathleen! I can't wait to see which ones you've chosen as your favorites.

Merry Christmas and give yourself a little rest ;)

I was also going to say Makeover Monday... or perhaps Midweek Makeover if Monday is a bit hard! I think this is the prettiest yet. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. Also I think you should simply seal the top of that table with all of your girls' markings, for posterity :-)

Hooray!!! I am so glad you will still be doing this! I am so inspired by you that I am going to do my own embellish knit month in January- just one per week.

This one is so beautiful!

You should make a directory so it's really easy to find all of the sweaters- with all of your free time.... : )

Thanks!!!

I'm so happy that there will be more sweater makeovers! I've been so inspired by your Embellish Knit Month. I've got a couple of sweaters in my closet I never wear that I so want to give a make over! Once I get my holiday sewing done, that's near the top of my list!

I loved the last 30 days; you truly inspired me to be more creative. Thanks!

Beautiful - this may be my favorite! On a side note - try nail polish remover on the table first before sanding it down. It takes sharpie marker off of cabinets, so it is worth a try. Merry Christmas!

Beautiful! I'll have to make some of the flowers, they remind me of peonies.

The sweaters were so fun to follow! I looked forward to each post. I am a sucker for alliteration too. What about Monday Marvels or Wear it Wednesday... Whatever you choose it'll be fun. :)

I have absolutely LOVED this series!

HipDroppedStitches said... Best Blogger Tips

This last one is so beautiful! I will have to try making these chiffon flowers. Thank you for sharing this series with us!

As for seeking alliteration... perhaps something that combines the word "Whimsy" with Wednesdays?

just chic said... Best Blogger Tips

spectacular! I love it!

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

I was thinking something like "Wednesday Night (knight?) Knits" whatever -- it's only a verbal alliteration, but you could make it whatever day of the week you wanted :)

And yes, I love this series. I have a red cashmere that might get some EKM treatment soon. It's not my style, so I've been sleeping in it, and it's so comfy that I'm reluctant to cut it up because it's such a wonderful sleep-sweater.

What I'd like to know is how you did your hair for the tulle sweater- so absolutely gorgeous!
