A Frock by Friday™: Thursday

April 29, 2010

Today were going to be taking it easy. Yesterday was probably the most difficult. It should be smooth sailing from here on out.

Hey Look! That's what you're going to have by the end of today.

1. Find center of skirt and center of bodice. Pin at center, right sides together. Stitch skirt to bodice, right sides facing, matching centers. Press seam allowances upwards towards bodice.

If you would like to add a sash, take your sash piece and fold it in half lengthwise. Place the two long ends of the doubled up sash between your bodice and skirt when sewing them together.

2.
If you added a sash cut off any excess on the ends.

3. Turn to the right side and iron down all your seams.

4. Try it on to see if it fits well. When I tried mine on I noticed that the ruffles stuck up a bit. To fix that take a needle and thread. Double up the thread and knot the ends.

Make a little stitch on the wrong side of the ruffle. Since you ruffle is two sided, sew through the bottom underside fabric of the ruffle and not the top piece. This way your ruffle is stitched to your bodice but you won't be able to see the stitch.

Repeat this step anywhere the ruffle sticks up.

Done for today!

This is so much fun! I could not have gotten this far without you!

I noticed your skirt seams are in the front and back? Was that just what you decided to do or was that the instruction that came with the pattern?

Jenny,
Actually, that's just the fold of the fabric! I'll iron that out on the last day.

Should the back of my skirt be left open until we put in the zipper? I think I may have missed a step because I haven't sewn the back sides of my skirt together.

Anonymous,
They should be left open until Friday when we put in the zipper.

Whew, I'm finally caught up. I had to do both Wednesday and Thursday today. I am loving how this dress is coming together. But I think the dress will turn out to be about 2 sizes too big, even though my mom did come over yesterday to check the fit of the bodice. But the side seams seem to be in the right place, so I think I'll just make any adjustments when I put in the zipper.

Jo,
That's a good idea. I would definitely recommend adjusting with the zipper.

My dress is coming along! One question for today- when attaching the sash, is the other long edge of the sash (the one not sandwiched between the bodice and skirt)attached in some way? Or do I wait and sew it into the zipper in the back? I hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help!

Tina,
No it is not attached. Just iron it down so that it hangs over the skirt. If you try to sew it in it will look awful! If this were a different pattern and the bodice were longer you could sew the sash 2.5" up from the bottom and attach it to the bodice and the other long side of the sash. But if we did this with this one the sash would be resting directly under the bust.

Thanks for asking in case anyone else was wondering the same thing.
