The style of this skirt reminded me of a fiesta which is why I named it after Mardi Gras. Out of the handful of words I retained from the six credits of French I took in college, I managed to remember the translation for skirt- which is jupe. Since the french language is so rooted in Louisiana, I thought it would fit perfectly with this skirt.
You can't tell very well from the top and right photographs but I used a hankerchief-feel, threadbare cotton fabric- gauzy enough to barely see through. To offset the navy I added a white rickrack. It is a tiered skirt and I used double-the-fabric for each subsequent tier to really give the skirt full body.
On a separate note, I'll be using a smaller version of the tissue paper flowers for the guests at the girls birthday party in July. They're so easy to make and look so lively. Great to tie onto a ponytail.

This is darling - and I love the sheer, gauzy fabric!
Absolutely adorable. The white rickrack is to die for!
Seriously. So cute!
So simple and beautiful. Perfect for summer!
Adorable... I love the contrast... it is perfect...
Fun, fun, fun!!! I want a headpiece like that. :)
It's so sweet and flouncy!
Whenever I visit your blog I always wish for a little girl to sew for!
Love the skirt, LOVE the headpiece! Wish I was little again to be able to pull it off!
This is my first time at your blog and I think it might be my new favorite-sewing-for-children site!!! :) I love the creativity and style that booms out of your handiwork! So, how long have you been sewing? Because I have a new sewing machine packed away that I keep telling myself to pull out and get to work on. Your stuff is just great!!! Only, I would be sewing for 2 little princes instead of princesses! :)
Jupe! What a great word :o) Such a pretty skirt you created, too. I hope you're having a fantastic and relaxing weekend!
